Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds (about 6 medium) Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Prepare the Potatoes:
    • Peel and slice the potatoes into thin, even slices (about 1/8-inch thick). Use a mandoline slicer for uniform results if available.
  3. Make the Cream Sauce:
    • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute until fragrant.
    • Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
    • Gradually whisk in the milk and heavy cream, ensuring no lumps form.
    • Add salt, pepper, and nutmeg (if using). Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and cook until slightly thickened (about 3-4 minutes).
  4. Layer the Potatoes and Sauce:
    • Arrange one-third of the potato slices in the prepared baking dish, slightly overlapping them.
    • Pour one-third of the cream sauce over the potatoes, spreading it evenly.
    • Sprinkle 1/3 of the shredded cheddar cheese over the layer.
    • Repeat this process for two more layers, finishing with a generous sprinkle of cheddar and Parmesan cheese on top.
  5. Bake:
    • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes.
    • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.
  6. Garnish and Serve:
    • Let the scalloped potatoes cool for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh thyme if desired.

Tips:

  • Cheese Variations: Swap cheddar for Gruyère, Monterey Jack, or a mix for a different flavor.
  • Add Protein: Include cooked ham or bacon between the layers for a heartier dish.
  • Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven for the best texture.
