Homemade Naan Bread Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 3/4 cup warm water (about 110°F/43°C)
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for rolling
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional, for flavor)
- 1/4 cup plain yogurt
- 1/4 cup warm milk
- 2 tablespoons melted butter, plus more for brushing
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
Instructions:
- Activate the yeast:
In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let sit for 5-10 minutes, until the yeast is frothy. - Prepare the dough:
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking powder, and garlic powder (if using). Make a well in the center and add the activated yeast mixture, yogurt, milk, and melted butter. Stir with a wooden spoon until a dough forms. - Knead the dough:
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is sticky, add a little more flour. Alternatively, you can use a stand mixer with a dough hook for this step. - Let the dough rise:
Lightly oil a bowl and place the dough inside, turning it to coat with oil. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size. - Divide the dough:
Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and let them rest for 10 minutes. - Roll out the naan:
On a floured surface, roll each dough ball into a flat oval or circle about 1/4 inch thick. - Cook the naan:
Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Once hot, place one naan onto the dry skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes, until bubbles form on the surface. Flip and cook for another 1-2 minutes, or until golden brown. Repeat with the remaining naan. - Brush with butter:
Brush each naan with melted butter immediately after cooking for a soft, flavorful finish. - Serve:
Serve the naan warm with curries, dips, or any of your favorite dishes.
