Classic Wonton Soup: A Heartwarming Chinese Delight
This traditional wonton soup features delicate pork-filled dumplings in a savory, aromatic broth. It’s comforting, light, and full of flavor.
Ingredients:
For the Wontons:
• ½ lb ground pork (or shrimp, or a mix of both)
• 1 tbsp soy sauce
• 1 tsp sesame oil
• 1 tsp grated ginger
• 1 clove garlic, minced
• 1 green onion, finely chopped
• ½ tsp salt
• ¼ tsp white pepper
• 1 tsp cornstarch
• 25–30 wonton wrappers
For the Broth:
• 4 cups chicken broth
• 2 cups water
• 1 tbsp soy sauce
• 1 tsp sesame oil
• 1-inch piece of ginger, sliced
• 2 cloves garlic, smashed
• 2 green onions, chopped
• Salt and white pepper to taste
Optional Garnishes:
• Chopped green onions
• Cilantro
• A drizzle of chili oil
Instructions:
1. Make the Wonton Filling:
In a bowl, mix ground pork, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, green onion, salt, white pepper, and cornstarch until well combined.
2. Assemble the Wontons:
• Place 1 tsp of filling in the center of a wonton wrapper.
• Moisten the edges with water, fold into a triangle, and press to seal.
• Bring the two bottom corners together and press to form a traditional wonton shape.
• Repeat until all filling is used.
3. Prepare the Broth:
• In a pot, bring chicken broth, water, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger, garlic, and green onions to a simmer for 10 minutes.
• Strain out the aromatics if desired, then adjust seasoning with salt and white pepper.
4. Cook the Wontons:
• Bring a separate pot of water to a boil.
• Drop in wontons and cook for 3–5 minutes, or until they float.
• Transfer cooked wontons to serving bowls.
5. Assemble and Serve:
• Ladle hot broth over the wontons.
• Garnish with green onions, cilantro, and a drizzle of chili oil if desired.
