GRANDMOTHER’S PIE CRUST RECIPE

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (cold, cubed)
  • 6-8 tablespoons ice water

Instructions:

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients:
In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar.
  2. Add Butter:
Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Add Ice Water:
Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing gently until the dough begins to come together. You may not need all the water.
  4. Form the Dough:
Gather the dough into a ball, then flatten it into a disk. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (or up to 2 days).
  5. Roll Out:
On a floured surface, roll out the dough to fit your pie pan. Transfer it to the pan and trim the edges.
  6. Pre-bake (if necessary):
If your pie recipe requires a pre-baked crust, prick the bottom with a fork and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes until lightly golden.
  7. Fill and Bake:
Fill with your desired pie filling and bake according to your specific pie recipe instructions.

Tips:

  • Keep butter and ingredients cold for a flakier crust.
  • You can store the dough in the freezer for up to 3 months—just thaw before using.

Enjoy your pie-making!
