Ingredients:
- 4 large eggs
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 cups whole milk (warmed slightly)
- Ground nutmeg (for sprinkling on top)
Instructions:
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C).
- Prepare Custard Mixture:
- In a medium mixing bowl, whisk the eggs until smooth.
- Gradually add the sugar and salt, whisking until combined.
- Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Slowly pour the warm milk into the egg mixture, whisking continuously to prevent curdling.
- Prepare for Baking:
- Pour the custard mixture into individual ramekins or a large baking dish.
- Sprinkle a light layer of ground nutmeg on top.
- Create a Water Bath:
- Place the ramekins or dish in a deep baking pan.
- Carefully pour hot water into the pan until it reaches about halfway up the sides of the custard dish(es).
- Bake:
- Bake for 40-50 minutes (for ramekins) or up to 1 hour (for a larger dish), or until the custard is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.
- A knife inserted near the center should come out clean.
- Cool and Serve:
- Remove the custard from the water bath and let it cool to room temperature.
- Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving.
Tips:
- For a smoother texture, strain the custard mixture through a fine mesh sieve before pouring it into the baking dish.
- Serve plain or with a drizzle of caramel or a dollop of whipped cream.
